Horrendous up-time issues (people throw epic tantrums if they miss a single premier or football game once a year on Comcrap. Complete lack of a viable DVR (did your stream just hiccup? Oh well, suck to be you have fun watching the first 25 minutes of that TV show again to get back to that point). It's cheap, the channel line up is almost exactly what I want, and the actual quality of the broadcasts is usually excellent. However, if it were simply dealing with those problems, I would probably consider Sling worth the hassle. The regional blockouts/streaming of syndicated programming isn't really something Sling has any control over, as they're at the mercy of the stupid Hollywood model of exclusive rights and other such nonsense that's plagued the music, movie and TV industry for decades and has only grown worse with the internet. The volume level is ridiculously low for the source feeds on many channels, and the commercials (sling ones only, sadly) are criminally amplified. Sling offers a solution for many of those problems, but makes the remaining ones 10X worse. Monopolies: Dont like cable, that's okay- choose one of the unscrupulous Dish companies that offer fake discounts and fees/penalties for everything under the sun instead, it's your only alternative in most cases. Dealing with "triple play" and other silly bundling offers, which may end up being a decent deal for people who still use home phone, but just penalizes anyone who doesn't need all 3 servicesĦ. Dealing with insanely over-amplified commercials compared to the source broadcast (something the FCC is claiming that they fixed, but is still a big problem)ĥ. Dealing with "you can't record this" or "you can't skip this commercial" or "this isn't available in your area" and other forms of DRM garbageĤ.
Having to buy/rent proprietary equipment/boxes from the cable companyģ.
Having to pay for hundreds of useless bundled channelsĢ. That problem alone is going to drive 90% of users away from this service.ġ. I just want to turn it on and watch TV like everyone else does. The only thing Sling needs to do to keep me as a customer is to get the apps to work consistently.
